TEAM JAX APPAREL & GEAR

My name is Jaxson Soriano. When I was born, I passed my newborn screening test with flying colors!  I was sent home after only one night in the hospital and my parents were eager to begin our life together at home.

Signs that something was wrong...
The whites of my eyes were slightly yellow since birth.  At the early follow up visits, the doctor said that it was likely breastfeeding- jaundice... and that it would subside.  In fact, one of the doctors ordered my bilirubin level (direct and total bilirubin) to be checked, but the lab only measured the total bilirubin.  If this direct bilirubin test was done, diagnosis and treatment could have been done much earlier.  The total bilirubin level came back within normal limits.  So I went home and the whites of my eyes remained slightly yellow.  We waited for them to subside thinking it was breastfeeding jaundice.  (signs and symptoms to watch out for.. click here)

Around 9 weeks of age, mommy says that I  turned bright yellow.  She brought me in to the doctor to be checked.  It turns out that I had some other symptoms that were just slightly off from the norm, but did not seem so alarming until my skin completely changed color.

By the time mom brought me in to the doctors at about 9 weeks, the signs would tell my doctor that this could no longer be confused with breastfeeding jaundice.  The doctor palpated my liver and could now tell that it was quite enlarged.  After taking STAT labs, all of the liver function tests were found to be sky high.  Mommy rushed me to Lucille Packard Children's

Hospital at Stanford for further testing.  After more labwork, an ultrasound, and liver biopsy I was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia (BA). (To read more ...click here)
A Second Chance at Life...
One day soon, I will need to have a liver transplant.  We don't know when exactly that day will come ... but my parents are preparing themselves emotionally and financially for my life-saving surgery.  Stanford representatives have informed us that the total cost of hospitalization for a liver transplant is somewhere between $1-2 million.  $500,000 will roughly cover the cost of the surgery alone.  This estimate does not include the option of the living donor.   With healthcare costs not fully covered by insurance, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure.

COTA
The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for patients that will undergo transplant. In Fremont, CA, volunteers (my loving aunties, uncles, grandma and grandpas) are raising funds for my upcoming surgery.  Volunteers are trying to reach a goal of $60,000 to assist in the costs associated with liver transplant.  100% of the funds raised will go toward transplant related expenses.  Donations are all tax deductible and many participating companies will match your donations as well.
